On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, American President Donald Trump labeled Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections” on the Truth Social platform. As officials from both the United States and Russia plan to meet regarding peace talks over the conflict in Ukraine, President Trump’s comments on the Ukrainian President may be a foreshadowing of a conclusion of the looming peace talks. President Trump’s comments on President Zelenskyy have more effects on any upcoming resolutions to the conflict in Ukraine than one may think. This article looks to break down whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a dictator or not and how President Trump’s comments on President Zelenskyy affect the ongoing peace efforts.

Is the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator or not?

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected president of Ukraine on May 20, 2019. Initially, Zelenskyy was required to serve a 5-year presidential term. In response to the Russian invasion in February 2022, President Zelenskyy imposed Ukraine under martial law in response to the Russian invasion. Effectively suspending elections. President Zelenskyy’s term was set to end in 2024, but since martial law is still in effect in Ukraine, there are no presidential elections. Keeping Zelenskyy in power until further notice. Does this make President Zelenskyy a dictator? It is too early to tell. Suspending elections is certainly undemocratic and very much dictator-esque. The thing is that there is an ongoing conflict in his nation, which does make it incredibly difficult to conduct elections. Depending on how one may look at it, either Zelenskyy is a dictator who opportunistically seized power by suspending elections, or he did the responsible thing by suspending elections during a time of war and will reinstate elections when the conflict concludes. Time will only tell, as post-war Zelenskyy’s actions will determine whether he is truly a dictator. Will he reinstate elections? Or will he live up to President Trump’s accusations?

President Trump’s accusations against President Zelenskyy may be evidence of how peace between Ukraine and Russia may look. President Trump is widely known to have a more favorable view of Putin than many other American politicians. President Trump may have run out of patience for President Zelenskyy and Ukraine. In addition to President Trump’s comments about Zelenskyy being a dictator, President Trump also stated, “Zelenskiy better move fast or he is not going to have a country left” (Reuters.com). Ukraine has received substantial assistance from the United States. The Department of State has said that the United States has provided Ukraine with 65.9 billion in military assistance since the Russian invasion of 2022. The number increases to 69.2 billion when counting from the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. It is within reason to believe that the Trump administration may have lost their patience with President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian war effort. President Trump’s comments towards President Zelenskyy may be justification to the American public in the scenario where Russia obtains favorable peace terms.

Only time will tell the future for President Zelenskyy. The next few months may be of great turbulence for the Ukrainian state.
